Lecture-and-Discussion Series Presents
"The Rhetoric and Substance of Human Rights"
Professor Deen K. Chatterjee
Sunday, April 9, 2006
Meet & Greet: 1:45 pm . Presentation: 2:00 pm . Meeting Closes: 3:30 pm
Salt Lake Main Library, 210 East 400 South, Fourth Floor Conference Room
Free and Open to the Public
Deen K. Chatterjee teaches philosophy at the University of Utah and is the
Editor-in-Chief of the forthcoming, multi-volume Encyclopedia of Global
Justice. His publications include, most recently, Democracy In a Global World:
Human Rights and Political Participation In the 21st Century (2006).
"With the gradual emergence of the global human-rights culture in the last 50
years and some of the worst transgressions of human rights during the same
period, it may seem that the human-rights talk is an empty rhetoric. To sort
out the rhetoric and the substance of human rights, this forum will examine
the nature, practice, and limits of human rights in global politics. As much
as the concept of universal human rights is meant to be a uniting idea, it has
also become a divisive and contested point over which battle lines have been
drawn. Keeping in focus the role of rights at the normative foundations of
justice and democracy, the forum will explore some of the myriad problems and
challenges of human rights through an examination of such topics as individual
and group rights, rights and culture, sovereignty and international law,
humanitarian intervention, and terrorism."

You may also order the all-you-can-eat salad bar and take your plate into the banquet room. If you wish to tip another 5 or 10 percent at your table, I'm sure it will be appreciated by the waitresses. Please support this month especially. If we do not have at least 20 to 25 people there, we will be charged a fee of $100.00 for the room; otherwise it is free. I'm confident that you will like the Sizzler. I have tried their food several times, and I think it is excellent. PROGRAM: A free film will be shown entitled "The God who Wasn't There". This film, produced by Beyond Belief Media, is based on evidence which shows that Jesus was likely a fictional character. It shows how the saviour presented in the Gospels bears a striking resemblance to other ancient heroes and the figureheads of pagan saviour cults. Other nefarious aspects of Christianity are also documented. Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times said that this film is "provocative - to put it mildly". COFFEE CHAT (2nd Wednesday of each month) April 11th, 7pm, at The Bakery, 250 S 300 E, Salt Lake City Come join us for a lively discussion while we enjoy coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches, pastries, etc. Topics For Discussion: l. Whatever topic you want to bring up. 2. Islam and Terrorism: a. Is the current Islamic terrorism caused by an Islamic totalitarian ideology, or by the foreign polices of the United States and other Western powers? b. Does the Qur'an or the Hadith (Islamic tradition) recognize democracy? c. How does terrorism by individuals or small groups compare with terrorism by governments? d. What should the United States do to reduce the number of terroristic acts?
