THE OGDEN WOODWIND QUINTET
How does one find in the Ogden/Salt Lake City area five amateur instrumentalists on clarinet, flute, oboe, French horn, and bassoon who are skilled enough to play the world's most difficult music composed for woodwind quintet? With great difficulty. How do these musicians, with families and other careers, find the time to practice together on a regular basis? With great difficulty.
And yet, the Ogden Woodwind Quintet, formed in 1981, has continued to mature and to expand its repertoire to include not only the many standard classical works, but also ragtime, jazz, barbershop, Jewish Klezmer, and Christmas favorites. As a result, the Quintet has played at many festivals, wedding receptions, Bar Mitzvahs, and church functions along the Wasatch front. They have had as much fun playing as the audiences have had listening.
The Quintet is directed by Mark Salita, a Senior Scientist atTRW. Other principal and backup members include a flute teacher, a computer analyst at IRS who studied at Julliard, an insurance adjuster who was a horn major at BYU, a bank manager, a Thiokol financial analyst, and a program manager at Hill AFB. Most are also members of the New American Symphony or the Rocky Mountain Symphony.
